Flowers in My Tool Box

I'm beginning to think my best projects are the ones not planned.  This one certainly reinforces that idea.  I so love it!

The end result came about the same way a lot of my projects do:  it started with an image in my head, but as I began to make it happen, the image evolved and the end product is so much better than what I originally pictured.

I ended up with this reproduction tool caddy made from old barn wood from my mom.  I remember she had it filled with fake apples and pinecones.  Apparently, I wasn't that interested in it because I told my hubby he could have it. {I don't recall that conversation. (:}  But he graciously gave it back to me to do with what I wanted and I think he approves of what I did.

With all the sunshiny days we've been having lately {albeit cold!} in South Texas, I decided to "spring up" my dining table and create a centerpiece with flowers.  I've had just candles since Fall, so it was time to change.  I remembered this little tool caddy and thought it would be cute with some glass milk bottles I had as vases.  Well, the caddy was smaller than I thought, and my milk bottles didn't fit.  But I had some mason jars just the right size.

I wanted to make it more than just a wood object sitting on my table, so I thought to paint some phrase on the side just to dress it up a bit.  In trying to think of just the right thing to write, since it was going to hold flowers, the words to the song "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music popped into my head: "Blossom snow, may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever." {I love that movie, don't you?!}  I decided on "may you bloom and grow" and worked up a layout on Word for tracing.  No fancy programs needed here.  (:

I've seen several ways to transfer printed words to wood, but I chose the "color charcoal on the back then trace" option.  I've actually seen it using graphite on the back, but I thought the charcoal might transfer better onto the rough barn wood.

And it did. (:

I actually got lucky with the font I chose because it looks like rough handwriting and while tracing it, the ridges in the wood made my lines jumpy, but that matched the font.  Yay!

Once I had it traced, I took a white paint pen and traced my tracing.  (:

O my goodness!  How cute is that?!

I added the mason jars, and wove a bit of eyelet between the jars for a little softening, and voila!

O my goodness! {yeah, I said it again}  It's so much better than what I pictured.  I love how it looks on my table.

Whadya think?

 Happy Spring! (:

  12. Jenni, Love, love your little trug/tool box. There are so many versions of them. We've been experimenting with making a few, fun projects. I shouldn't say "we've" been making them as hubs does all the cutting/putting together, bless his heart. I get an idea then try to show him what I want. Have several I've printed off blogs, also.
Found your blog thru 52 mantels 12 fresh spring ideas. I'll be a new follower.
Noticed your little glass candle holders, I have several like them, gotten at thrift stores.I get so much use of them, love the sparkle. Even if I have 2 or 3 already, if I see them I have to buy them. Your trug looks so cute with your gorgeous flowers on your table.
Do I ever love Sound of Music. One of my biggest favorites even. Makes me feel so bad for Julie Andrews with her beautiful voice, can't sing anymore. I'm going to put that saying on my trug like yours when it's made. Happy Mother's Day
