Organizing Household Tools: Easy Catch-All

Y'all.

My husband is a genius!

An incredible out-of-the-box thinker.

The other half of my creative soul.

Ok, ok....I could keep going, you know, haha!

I guess I'll start at the beginning so you know why I am boasting about his genius.

Confession:  I really am not the most organized person when it comes to my own space.  Try as I might to emulate some of the amazing-looking, immaculately organized pantries, linen closets, bathroom cabinets, etc. out there in blogland and on Pinterest, it just doesn't happen.  I do really try!

I can deal with those areas being haphazardly "organized," but the one thing that drives me absolutely bonkers is our household tool storage.

Since we don't have a garage or storage space outside directly linked to the house, we keep a few tools in the house to use for everyday purposes.

Hammers, tape measures, nails, levels, screwdrivers, etc.

But where they live in the house has always been, well, all over the place.

A couple in a drawer here...

A few more in a drawer there...

Or maybe stashed on a shelf here...

Or maybe none of those places at all, and you spend more time searching them out than it took to actually accomplish what you needed the tool for!

Here's where hubby's genius comes into play.

We've been trying hard to figure out the BEST way to store our household tools so that they are easily accessible, and easy to put back in the same place EVERY TIME!

So, one day he says, "what if we use one of those over-the-door shoe holders."

Ding Ding Ding!  You win!  Genius!

Here's how you make it happen:

{ONE}  Go buy an over-the-door shoe organizer (or use one you have, I'm all for being frugal!).

{TWO}  Hang shoe holder on door.  We decided our hot-water heater closet would work best because it is centrally-located in our house and it had a bare door.  That, obviously, is pretty important.  (Our other two storage closets have shelves screwed to them on the inside for more storage.)

{THREE}  Scavenge around your house and find all of the homeless tools. (This was all I could find :/  I know there's more out there -- thus the need for this thing!)

{FOUR}  Place each tool in a pocket, and organize how you want.

{FIVE}  Because my shoe holder wasn't transparent, I decided to label each pocket so I'd know what was where.

I just took a good ol' Sharpie, and wrote what tool was in each pocket just above the opening.

{SIX}  Hang tool holder back on door.

And that's. It!  Wham bam, thank you ma'am, or sir, in this case!

Now our tools have a lovely home.  And I don't have to dig through a drawer, or play hide-and-seek with the hammer (or whatever else) to finish a project.

They are all right in one place, neatly tucked away, waiting conveniently to be utilized!

Told you my husband was a genius!  (So maybe I'm biased ;)

TTfN!
